Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

2003
Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, Santa Fe, New Mexico

The sculptor, a Pueblo from Jemez, New Mexico, re-envisions St. Kateri as a native of the American Southwest, with an eagle-feather wand, turquoise jewelry, and a wool shawl instead of the usual short, fringed top. She keeps the tunic and leggings of the traditional iconography but reduces the cross to a small part of the figure's rosary, which is itself an innovation.
